Vazhaipoo Poriyal
Banana Flower is a rich source of Vitamin A and Vitamin C. Banana Flower  is called as Arati Puvvu in telugu and Vazhaipoo in tamil.  Cleaning the banana flowers is time consuming and requires lots of patience. Allot at least one hour for cleaning the flowers. Although cleaning vazhaipoo is time consuming, when you taste the poriyal you will feel its worth giving it a try. Banana flower stir fry is usually served as a side dish to Rice.  Please check below for step by step instructions and pictures for preparing vazhaipoo poriyal.

Vazhaipoo Poriyal


Ingredients:
Cleaned chopped banana flowers 1 Cup
Onions Chopped1/4 Cup
Oil2 tsp
Mustard1/4 tsp
Channa Dal1 tsp
Urad Dal1 tsp
Curry leaves2
Green Chilly2
Salt
Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
Asafoedita powderpinch
Shredded coconut1 tbsp
Coriander leaves chopped2 stalks



Instructions:
  • Heat oil in the pan and add mustard, urad dal and channa dal. When channa dal turn golden colour, add curry leaves, green chillies and onion. Fry till onion turn translucent.

  • Add chopped banana flower, turmeric powder and salt. Fry it in medium flame for 2 minutes. Add water till the flowers immerse. Cook till all the water is drained and check whether the banana flower is cooked completely.

  • Once the banana flower is cooked, Garnish with coriander leaves and shredded coconut.
Tips:
  • Adding coconut is optional
  • Before adding coconut and coriander leaves, check whether banana flowers are fully cooked. If else, sprinkle some water and cook it.

  2. Its been ages since I had vazhaipoo in any form. I find them at the store but I do not buy them because, I do not like to clean the flowers. The poriyal looks delicious.
