Enga Ooru Coimbatore unga ... It means my home town is Coimbatore in Kongu Tamil slang. Kongunadu is a region in Tamil Nadu including Coimbatore, Nilgiri, Salem, Erode,Nammakal, Karur, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts. Kongu Tamil is known for using words in respectful tone. Kongu Cuisine or Kongu samayal is quite extensive to compile as the Kongu region is vast and includes recipes from almost 50 towns. Kongu food is unique for its simplicity and nutritious value. Less Oil is used for cooking when compared to other cuisine. As the region has lot of coconut trees, coconut is used widely in cooking. We extensively use roasted turmeric, groundnuts, sesame seeds and dry ginger. Toor dal, Green Mung dal and Horse gram dal are widely used lentils. Palm Jaggery is used for making sweets or preparing sukku coffee. Thanks to abundance of palm trees. Apart from rice, millets are also used for preparing main dish. Compiled is a list of Kongunadu recipes.
