Arisi Paruppu Sadam

Being a Coimbatorian, I love this tasty and quick arisium paruppu sadham. This arisi paruppu sadham recipe comes to hand, whenever there is no vegetable in home. Arisi Paruppu Sadham is quite common in Kongu Nadu. It is a famous dish from Coimbatore. This  Dhal Rice / Rice Kichadi  along with Appalam and Mango Pickle makes a great lunch or dinner. My toddler and elder one loves this paruppu sadham anytime. Please check below for step by step instructions and pictures for preparing South Indian Arisi paruppu sadham.

Authentic Coimbatore Arisi paruppu sadam prepared with Toor dal and Rice.No side dish required

Ingredients:
Rice: 1 Cup
Red Gram | Toor dal : 1/2 Cup
Oil / Ghee : 2 tsp
Cumin seeds : 1/2 tsp
Sombu | Fennel seeds : 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves : 4 to 6
Red Chillies : 3
Shallots : 1/2 Cup
Garlic : 4 cloves
Tomatoes chopped : 1/4 cup
Coriander powder : 1/2 tsp
Chilli powder : 1/2 tsp
Sambar powder(optional) : 1 tsp
Salt : As needed
Coriander Leaves : For Garnishing

Instructions:
1.Wash rice and toor dal and soak it for 30 mins. Heat oil or ghee in the cooker and add mustard and allow it to splutter. Add cumin seeds and Fennel seeds.

2.After a min, add chopped shallots, chopped garlic, red chillies and curry leaves. Fry till onions turn light brown or translucent. Add chopped tomatoes and fry for 2 mins. Dont make it too mushy.

3.Add rice,dal,salt,turmeric Powder,chilli Powder,coriander Powder,sambar Powder and coriander leaves. Add 3 cups of water and mix well. Pressure cook and allow 3 whistles.

Tips:
Adding 1 tsp of Ghee or Coconut oil in the last adds more flavour to the recipe.
If shallots are not available,replace it with onions.
Adjust red chillies to your taste.
Green chillies are not used in authentic arisi paruppu sadam.

    I more or less make a similar variety of dal rice, I have never added fennel seeds though, I will try this.

  5. I used to have this in my college(Kongu) hostel mess on saturdays. I love this food and searching for the recipe. I dunno its name is arisi paruppu sadam... They serve with onion raitha and pickle
