Tomato Sevai | Thakkali Sevai

Tomato SevaiString hoppers or Idiyappam is a south Indian Breakfast recipe. It is prepared using rice. My mom usually makes the Idiyappam from scratch in home. As I don't have the Idiyappam vessel in US, I get the instant Idiyappam from Indian grocery. There are many versions of this sevai / Idiyappam / Indian Noodles. Please check below detailed steps for making Tomato sevai - Thakkali Sevai.

Yields :                        2 Servings. 

Tomato Sevai

Instant Rice sevai
(Tightly packed)
2 Cups
Tomato Paste
3 tbsp
2 tbsp
1/4 tsp
Cumin seeds
1/2 tsp
Curry leaves
Ginger finely chopped 
1 tsp
Onions chopped
1/2 cup
Chana dhal
1 tsp
Urad dhal
1 tsp

Green chillies
Roasted Peanuts
3 tbsp
Coriander Leaves
2 stalks

  • Cook instant rice sevai as per instructions given in packet. Over cooking the sevai will make it sticky. Mix 1 tbsp of Oil and keep it ready.
  • Heat 1 tbsp of oil in the pan and add mustard, chana dhal, urad dhal and fry it till channa dhal turns golden brown color. 

  • Add chopped onions, green chillies and  ginger. Fry till onions turn translucent. Switch of the stove.Add tomato paste, 3 tbsp of water and coriander leaves. Cook for 2 mins till the paste becomes thick.

  •  Mix sevai,salt and peanuts.

  • Adding peanuts is optional. To get rich flavour, add roasted cashews or peanuts.
  • Tomato paste can be replaced by blanched and grind ed tomato. I prefer using tomato paste, as it gives nice colour and blend with sevai.
  • Adjust chillies to your taste.
