Ribbon Murukku | Ola Pakoda

Ribbon Murukku
Ribbon Murukku is a crispy South  Indian snacks. This murukku is prepared in many homes during festivals like diwali, pongal and any other occassion. I love thenkuzhal murukku when compared to this ribbon murukku.  I usually prepare murukku from store bought rice flour. Below preparation is an Instant Murukku preparation using store bought rice flour and besan flour. This is also called as Nada murukku or ola pakoda or ottu pakoda. This murukku will be crispy and consumes very less oil. Please check below for step wise instructions for making Ribbon Murukku.

Preparation Time: 5 mins
Cook Time: 40 mins
Ready In: 45 mins
Yields : 5 Servings
Ribbon Murukku

Ingredients:
Oil
For Frying
Rice Flour
11/4 Cups
Besan Flour/ Kadalai Maavu
3/4 Cup
Sesame seeds
1 tsp
Unsalted butter
1/2 tbsp
Salt

Chilli powder
1 tsp
Instructions:
  • Add rice flour, besan flour, sesame seeds, salt, chilli powder, butter and water and mix well.Make soft dough (similar to Chappathi dough).

  • Now put the dough into  the murukku press. Use the plate having two lines as shown in picture below.

  • Heat enough oil to deep fry. To check whether oil is hot, drop a little dough into oil. If it bubbles up on top, then oil is hot. Carefully press the murukku press on top and drop the dough into the oil .

  • Fry till light golden brown colour. Drain the excess oil by placing it in a paper towel.

Tips:
  • The dough will become dry after some time, so cover dough and prepare murukku immediately.
  • Beginners can press the dough on backside of big ladle or on plastic cover and drop the pressed dough into Oil.
  • My mom adds pinch of asaofetida powder to the dough.

  2. We have it during occasions and very popular during Diwali. I don't make it but pinch from my mum some. The ribbons are lovely and the other attraction is the plating. The contrast of the blue basket against the golden brown ribbons are perked up. Crispy and crunchy snack and adore it.
