Cluster beans ia a type of green beans. It is Known as Kothavarangai in tamil, Goruchikkudu in telugu. It is also known as Gavar or Guvar beans. cluster beans has slightly bitter taste and is commonly used in India in preparation of poriyal, dals and gravy. Kothavarangai is rich source of protein and fibres. Kothavarangai poriyal is served as a side dish to Rice. Kothavarangai Poriyal

Chopped cluster beans
1 Cup
Onions chopped
1/2 Cup
1 tbsp
1/4 tsp
Red chilly
Curry leaves
shredded coconut
1 tbsp 
Urad dal
1 tsp
Channa dal
1 tsp

Green chillies
Coriander Leaves chopped
1 stick

  • Heat oil in the pan and add mustard, Urad dal and channa dal.When channa dal turn golden colour, add curry leaves, green chillies and red chillies. Fry for a min.

  • Add chopped onions. Fry till onion turn translucent. Add cluster beans. Fry for a min.

  • Add 1.5 cups of water and salt. Once all the water is absorbed and cluster beans are cooked, add coriander leaves.  Switch of the stove  and add shredded coconut.

  • The essential nutrients will lose, if we wash the chopped vegetables, so Wash the vegetable thoroughly then chop into small pieces.
  • For more spicy add 1 red chilli and 1 more green chilli
