Cluster beans is Known as Kothavarangai in tamil, Goruchikkudu in Telugu. It is also known as Gavar or Guvar beans. cluster beans has slightly bitter taste and is commonly used in India in preparation of poriyal, dals and gravy. Kothavarangai is rich source of protein and fibers. Kothavarangai paruppu usili is a famous recipe from South India. Cluster beans paruppu Usili

Ingredients: 
Table 1: To Grind
Toor Dal | Thuvaram paruppu1/4 Cup
Cumin seeds | Seeragam1 tsp
Fennel seeds | Sombu1 tsp
Turmeric powder1/4 tsp
Curry Leaves4 to 6
Red chillies2

finely chopped
1.5 Cup
Oil2 tsp
Mustard1/4 tsp
Urad dal | Ulutham paruppu1 tsp
Curry Leaves4 to 6
Asafoetida powder | HingPinch
SaltAs needed

Instructions:

  • Wash and soak toor dal for one hour. Strain the extra water. Grind toor dal along with cumin seeds, fennel seeds, turmeric powder, curry leaves and red chillies into coarse powder without adding water.

  • Mix the ground coarse powder along with finely chopped cluster beans. Steam cook for 10 to 15 mins in Idli vessel.

  • Heat Oil in a pan. Add mustard and allow it to splutter.Add urad dal, curry leaves. Fry till urad dal turns golden color. Add asafoetida powder. Add the steam cooked dal and cluster beans, salt. Fry for 2 to 3 mins. Serve it with rice.

Tips:
Cluster beans should be very finely chopped.
Don't add water while grinding toor dal.

  1. hey I never knew that toor dal to be used 1/2 cup.. my mom uses 1/4 cup of toor dal..But tastes good..super
