Omam Kuzhambu | Ajwain Kuzhambu

Ajwain is known as omam in Tamil, vaamu in Telugu  It is also referred to as carom seeds, thymol seeds. Ajwain seeds helps in easy digestion. It is also good remedy for acidity. This is a No Onion No garlic and No tomato Kuzhambu. Serve this spicy Omam Kuzhambu with rice and papad. Omam Kuzhambu | Ajwain Kuzhambu

Ingredients: 
Table 1: To Dry roast and grind
Ajwain | Omam2 tsp
Coriander seeds | Dhaniya1 tbsp
Chana dal | Kadalai paruppu1 tsp
Urad dal | Ulutham paruppu1 tsp
Cumin seeds | Seeragam1 tsp
Red chillies2
Black pepper | Milagu1/2 tsp
Fenugreek seeds | Vendhayam1/4 tsp

Table 2:
Oil2 tsp
Mustard seeds1/4 tsp
Urad dal1 tsp
Curry leaves5 to 8
Asafoetida powder | HingPinch
Turmeric powder
TamarindHalf Lemon Size
SaltAs needed

Instructions:

  • Dry roast all the ingredients in table 1. Allow it to cool and grind it into smooth powder in blender or mixie.

  • Soak tamarind in hot water for 10 minutes. Squeeze the seeds and fibre to get the tamarind juice. Add turmeric powder and keep it ready.

  • Heat Oil in a pan. Add mustard and allow it to splutter. Add urad dal and curry leaves. Fry till urad dal turns golden colour. Add a pinch of asafoetida powder.

  •  Add tamarind juice, spice mixture got from ingredients in table 1 and salt. Allow the kuzhambu to boil and simmer for 5 mins.

Tips:
Adjust red chillies and black pepper to your taste.
