Biryani Idiyappam | Biryani Sevai

Biryani Idiyappam
Idiyappam or string hoppers is a famous South Indian breakfast recipe. There are many versions of this sevai /santhakkai / Idiyappam /Rice Noodles / Indian Noodles.  I have already posted Coconut Sevai,Lemon sevaiTamarind Sevai and Tomato sevai. Biryani Idiyappam is a twist to normal Idiyappam. Fresh vegetables are added which provides a complete healthy sevai. Ingredients and the method of preparation is more similar to Vegetable Biryani.Please check below for step by step instructions and pictures for preparing South Indian Spicy Biryani Idiyappam.

Yields : 3 servings
Biryani Sevai

Ingredients:
Instant Rice sevai (tightly packed)
2 Cups
Oil
1 tbsp
Cloves
2
Cinnamon stick
1 inch
Green Cardamom
Ginger and Garlic finely chopped 
2 tsp
Green chilly slit lengthwise
2
Onions chopped
1/2 cup
Tomato chopped
1/4 cup
Cooked Vegetables 
(Carrots and Beans) 
1/2 Cup
Salt
As needed
Turmeric powder
1/4 tsp
Coriander powder
1 tsp
Chilli powder
1 tsp
Mint leaves
4 to 5
Coriander Leaves chopped
2 stalks
Yogurt
2 tsp
Lemon Juice
1/2 tsp

Instructions:
  • Cook instant rice sevai as per instructions given in packet. Over cooking the sevai will make it sticky. Mix 1 tbsp of Oil and keep it ready.

  • Heat oil in a pan. Add  garam masala items and (cloves, cinnamon and cardamom), green chillies, finely chopped ginger, garlic.  Fry it till raw smell goes off. Add Onion and fry till onions turn translucent.

  • Add tomatoes and fry till they turn mushy. Add veggies of your choice.

  •  Add salt, turmeric powder, coriander powder and chilli powder. Also add yogurt, mint leaves and coriander leaves. Mix well.

  •  Switch off the stove. Add lemon juice followed by cooked sevai. Mix well. Add salt if needed.

Tips:
Add vegetables of your choice. Recommended vegetables are carrots, beans, potatoes and green peas. 
Adjust chilli powder and green chillies to your taste.

  2. Very interesting and inviting. There's plenty of rice noodles over here and I am looking hard at the rest of the ingredients so that this dish will hit our table. Love the flavors and touch of biryani style.
