Coconut Oil : 1 tbsp
Mustard : 1/4 tsp
Cumin Seeds : 1/2 tsp
Red chillies : 2
Curry leaves : 4 to 6
Shallots : 1/2 Cup
Garlic cloves : 6
Turmeric powder : 1/4 tsp
cumin powder : 1/4 tsp
coriander powder : 1 tsp
chilli powder : 1 tsp
Salt : As needed
Coriander Leaves : For garnishing
Wash horse gram 2 to 3 times in running water. Check for small stones and dirt. Pressure cook it for 4 or 5 whistles. Add extra water, if dal water is needed for preparing kollu rasam.
Allow dal to cool and grind the dal coarsely in a mixie. Heat 1 tbsp of oil and add mustard seeds and Cumin seeds. Let them splutter.
Add curry leaves,shallots, red chillies, and garlic. Fry them for a while.When Shallots turn translucent, add 1 cup of water,cooked dal,turmeric powder, cumin powder, coriander powder and chilli powder. Once the chutney thickens and reaches desired consistency. Add Salt and garnish with coriander leaves.

Before serving kollu paruppu chutney, add 1 tsp of coconut oil.
Adjust chilli powder and red chilli to your taste.
