Bonda Soup | step by step pictures

Bonda Soup
First time I tasted bonda soup in Bangalore, since then  I fell in love with it. Bonda soup is a South Indian snacks served as a evening snacks or light tiffin. Soup is prepared from toor dal.  Bonda is prepared from urad dal. Green chillies, ginger, coriander leaves, curry leaves is added to Urad dal batter and deep fried in Oil. Deep fried bonda is soaked in lentil toor dal soup and served. Please check below for step by step instructions and pictures for preparing South Indian snacks Bonda Soup.

Cook Time: 30 mins
Yields: 4 servings
1 Bonda Soup

Ingredients:
Table 1: For Soup
Oil1 tbsp
Mustard1/4 tsp
Cumin Seeds1/2 tsp
Onion or shallots1/2 cup
Tomato chopped1/2 Cup
Turmeric Powder1/4 tsp
Chilli Powder2 tsp
Coriander Powder1/2 tsp
Red Gram Dhal / Toor Dhal   1/2 Cup
Salt
Coriander leaves chopped2 stalks

Table 2: For Bonda
Urad Dal / Ulunthu paruppu 
1/2 cup   
Oil
For Deep Frying
Ginger finely chopped
1 tsp
Curry leaves finely chopped 
3-5
Green chillies finely chopped 
1
Coriander leaves finely chopped 
2 stalks
Black pepper 
10-15
Salt


Instructions:
  • Wash and soak urad dal for 1.5 hours. Strain the water. Grind urad dal to a smooth paste in a grinder Grind it till urad dal turns soft and fluffy.

  • Add salt, ginger, curry leaves, green chillies, coriander leaves and black pepper to the dough and mix well.

  •  Heat Oil for deep frying. Drop small lemon size of batter in oil and deep fry till it turns golden brown on both sides.Drain the excess oil by placing it in a paper towel.

  •  Wash Toor Dhal and  soak for 30 minutes. Pressure cook it for 4 or 5 whistles along with turmeric powder.

  • Add salt, chilli powder and coriander leaves to cooked dal. Heat 1 tbsp of Oil and add mustard. When mustard splutters, add cumin seeds.

  • Add onions and fry till onions turn translucent. Add tomato and fry til they turn mushy. Add dal and 1/2 cup water.Mix well. Allow it to boil and simmer for 5 mins.

  • Serve the Bonda by soaking in soup as shown below
