Samba Rava Kichdi
Cracked wheat is rich in fiber and nutrients. It is very good for heart. Samba ravai or cracked wheat is extensively used in Kongunadu. Cracked wheat Upma is a very popular recipe from South India. Mixed vegetables are used for preparing this Kichadi. I have used pressure cooker to simplify the process. This makes an easy, quick and healthy Breakfast recipe. Yields: 3 Servings
Cracked Wheat Kichadi

Ingredients:
Oil2 tsp
Mustard1/4 tsp
Chana Dal | Kadalai paruppu1 tsp
Curry leaves4 to 6
Red Chillies2
Green Chillies2
Ginger chopped1 tsp
Onions chopped1/2 Cup
Tomato chopped1/4 Cup
Carrot and beans chopped1 Cup
Turmeric powder1/4 tsp
SaltAs needed
Samba Ravai | Cracked wheat1 Cup
Coriander leavesFor Garnishing

Instructions:

  • Heat oil in pressure cooker. Add mustard and allow it to splutter. Add chana dal, curry leaves, red chillies and green chillies. Fry till chana dal turns golden color. Add ginger and onions. Fry till onions turn translucent.

  • Add tomatoes and fry till they turn mushy. Add vegetables of your choice. I have added carrot, beans. Add enough salt, turmeric powder and mix well.

  •  Add cracked wheat, water and mix well. Add coriander leaves and pressure cook for 2 to 3 whistles.

Tips:
The quantity of water depends on the size of cracked wheat. I usually add 3.5 cups of water for 1 cup of cracked wheat.
Adjust green chillies and red chillies to your taste.

  2. I love the dalia khichdi...I make it with toor daal or moong daal. Next time i'll try with chana daal too.
