Pacha Kollu Rasam | Horsegram Soup

My mom prepares this Pacha Kollu Rasam to treat cold and cough. This rasam is a savior during flu season. This rasam can be  taken as a side dish to Rice or even drink it as a Soup.  A very simple rasam - just grind all the ingredients and cook till raw smell goes off.  The specialty about this rasam is horse gram soaked for some time and ground directly without cooking it. Garlic, pepper added to rasam not only gives taste but also helps in curing cold. Pacha Kollu Rasam

Table 1 : To Grind
Horse gram | Kollu paruppu2 tbsp
Shallots or onions  chopped1/2 Cup
Tomatoes chopped1/2 Cup
Medium sized garlic cloves8
Curry Leaves4 to 5
Coriander seeds | Dhaniya2 tsp
Red Chilli1
Black Pepper | Milagu1 tsp
Cumin seeds | Seeragam1 tsp
Tamarind (Optional)small piece
SaltAs needed
Asafoetida | Perungayampinch
Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp

Table 2:
Oil / Ghee2 tsp
Mustard | Kadugu1/4 tsp
Coriander leaves chopped2 stalks

  • Wash and soak horse gram | Kollu paruppu in water for 20-30 mins. Grind all the ingredients from table 1 into a fine paste in blender by adding enough water.

  • Heat Oil/Ghee in a pan. Add mustard and allow it to splutter. Add the ground mixture and 3 Cups of water.Allow the rasam to boil and simmer for 15 mins till raw smell goes off. Add coriander leaves and switch off the stove.

Adjust black pepper and red chilli to your taste.
Alternatively coriander leaves can also be ground along with other ingredients.
