Kollu RasamKongunad style Kollu Rasam. Rice side dish.Preparation Time : 5 mins | Cooking Time : 40 mins | Yields : 2 Recipe Category: Side dish Recipe Cuisine: South Indian - Kongunadu Author: Nithya
Ingredients:
Oil : 1 tsp Mustard : 1/4 tsp Cumin Seeds : 1 tsp Tamarind : Half Lemon Size Asafoetida Powder : Pinch Ripe Tomato : 1 Curry Leaves : 4 to 6 Finely chopped Garlic Cloves : 2 Shallots chopped finely : 2 Turmeric Powder : 1/4 tsp Cumin Powder : 1/2 tsp Freshly ground pepper : 1 tsp Coriander Powder : 1 tsp Horse gram dal : 2 tbsp Salt : As needed Coriander Leaves : 1 stalk
Instructions:
Soak tamarind in 2 cups of hot water and squeeze the tamarind to get tamarind juice. Discard seeds and fibers. Mash the tomato with hand and add the tomato juice to tamarind. Discard tomato skin.
Wash horsegram dal and pressure cook it for 4-5 whistles. Grind it to a coarse paste. Add dal paste along with dal water to tamarind tomato juice. Add turmeric powder, cumin powder, pepper powder, coriander powder, salt and coriander leaves.
Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds and Curry Leaves. When mustard splutter, add finely chopped shallots, garlic and Asafoetida powder. Fry till shallots turn translucent. Add the juice mixture. Allow it to boil and simmer for 5 mins.
Tips:
Adjust pepper to your taste. Usually I prefer preparing Kollu paruppu chutney along with kollu rasam, as both needs cooking and grinding horse gram dal. My mom usually adds only dal water to rasam, but I love adding some dal also. If you want a thicker consistency, then add dal otherwise just add dal water. Dal water is the water used while soaking and cooking horse gram. |
Kollu Rasam | Ulavalu rasam
Kongunadu people use horse gram frequently in home. Being a coimbatorian, I love this horse gram rasam. Kollu also known as ulavalu in Telugu has more iron content and maintains body temperature during winter. Kollu rasam is a finger licking recipe and can be taken as a soup. Kollu Rasam is served as an side dish to Rice. Please check below for step by step instructions and pictures for preparing Kongunad special Horse gram Rasam|Horse gram rasam.
