Bisi bele bath is a Kannada word which means Hot Lentil Rice. This tasty yummy recipe is origin of Karnataka State. This recipe is usually served hot along with coconut chutney, appalam, chips or onion raita. I usually prepare this recipe on Friday or Saturday, when I have to finish my remaining vegetables in Fridge before Grocery shopping. It is an easy one pot meal recipe. Ingredients: Table 1: Rice: 1 Cup Red Gram | Toor dal : 3/4 Cup Oil / Ghee : 1 tbsp Mustard : 1/4 tsp Curry leaves : 4 to 6 Shallots : 1/4 Cup Tamarind : Gooseberry size Tomatoes chopped : 1/4 cup Turmeric powder : 1/4 tsp Veggies of your choice : 1.5 cup Salt : As needed Bisi bele bath powder Table 2: To Dry roast and Grind Red Chillies : 5 Shredded coconut : 1.5 tbsp Cumin seeds : 1 tsp Sombu | Fennel seeds : 1/2 tsp Coriander seeds : 2 tsp Channa dal : 2 tsp Urad dal : 2 tsp Cloves : 2 Cinnamon stick : 1 inch Fenugreek seeds : 1/4 tsp Asafoetida powder : pinch Table 3: For Garnishing Oil / Ghee : 2 tsp Mustard : 1/4 tsp Curry leaves : 4 to 6 Red Chillies : 2 Cashews : 10 Coriander Leaves finely chopped : 2 stalks Instructions:
1. Bisi bele bath powder: Dry roast and grind all the ingredients mentioned in table 2. Soak tamarind in hot water for 10 minutes. Squeeze the seeds and fibers to get tamarind juice. Filter the juice and discard seeds and fibres. Wash and soak toor dal and rice for 30 mins.
2. Heat oil in the pan and add mustard. When they splutter add chopped shallots and curry leaves. Fry till shallots turn golden brown colour. 3. Now add chopped tomato, salt, turmeric powder and fry till the tomatoes become tender and juicy. Add chopped veggies of your choice and fry for 2 mins. I added carrots, beans, potato, lady's finger and shallots. 4. Add ground powder got from ingredients in table 2. Now add Rice, Dal , tamarind juice with this and garnish with coriander leaves. Add 4.5 cups of water and allow 4 whistles.Add 1 tsp of Ghee before serving. For Garnishing: 5. Heat Oil in a pan. Fry cashews till golden brown. Remove cashews and add red chillies and curry leaves. Fry for 30 sec and garnish on top of cooked bisi bela bath Serve it with appalam and coconut chutney. Some people prefer onion raita.

Tips: Adding coconut is optional. To get rich flavour, add roasted cashews. Adjust red chillies to your taste. Bachelors can use store bought bisibelabath powder or sambar powder( Taste will be bit different) and skip grinding it. The preferred choice of vegetable are shallots, carrots, beans, green peas, lady's finger, broad beans, drumstick, potatoes. |
